The 3 most common ways couples emotionally cheat on each other

Emotional Affairs

Emotionally cheating on someone is a real thing! It usually starts with an innocent friendship and without you realizing it grows in to something more intimate.

There may not be any sex involved but once you emotionally start connecting with someone else and confiding and sharing things with them you would usually with your partner, it is definitely a form of infidelity. Emotionally cheating on someone can create havoc on many levels.

There is that closeness first off, which becomes apparent sooner or later. Secondly, you start to wonder why you aren’t sharing more intimate things with your partner anymore.

Lets look at the top 3 ways people can emotionally cheat on their spouse:

The ‘www Spouse’

The internet definitely opens a window to infidelity. There is so much to explore and find virtually, that sometimes people get carried away with the cyber madness around us. We’re always connected from our phones, our gadgets, laptops or desktops. Since availability has become so generic, there are chances you might get carried away in a playful banter with friends, acquaintances or complete strangers and head towards a very viable flirtatious behaviour, while in a relationship with someone else.

This could be a way of distracting yourself but often than not, it can lead to a midnight soiree of exchanging messages, pictures and videos online. While you may think it’s harmless, it’s actually detrimental to your current relationship. It may mean your real time relationship is not as interesting as the one you’re having virtually with one or many people. Yes, stalking people obsessively online, whilst in a relationship is cheating too!

The ‘Phone Spouse’

This is the most common form of cheating amongst millennial’s today. Everyone is on their phone, going through social media sites, stalking different profiles on social media or just chatting away through texts and Whatsapp messages with someone random. We reckon you try and remember the last time you spent an hour, undistracted by your phone, with your partner. That unadulterated 60 minutes, without your phone in the picture can actually save a relationship.

Quality time is all we have to salvage relationships and we have to work hard to earn that time. If you spend it on your phone, while your partner is around, it clearly is a big identifier that your relationship is probably heading towards the dumpster. Most people are sadly and disturbingly in a relationship with their phones nowadays and that, on many levels, comprises of cheating as well.

The ‘Work Spouse’

This is another form of subconsciously alienating your partner with the likes of a work colleague you’re very close to. It’s one thing to laugh and make silly jokes at the expense of you boss, with another colleague but it’s another thing to spend all your time with someone at work and share intimate secrets with them, while you’re in a relationship with someone else.

If you’re hiding the closeness you share with this person from your partner, then there is something you need to worry about. Sometimes you may want to just share the relationship stress or work stress with this person but make sure you thin down the lines and realise what’s crossing the line and what’s not and never keep your partner in the dark about the association you share with your colleagues at work unless of course there is something to hide.

In Summary

While physically cheating on someone may mean you’re just fulfilling a sexual desire, while you’re still emotionally connected to your partner, emotional cheating may mean your heart isn’t in the relationship anymore.

Do you have someone in your life like a close colleague or a friend you’re beginning to get too emotionally close to?
